Former Inter defender Andreas Brehme has said that Robin Gosens is an extra weapon for Inter going into the final part of the season, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former German defender spoke glowingly about his compatriot who looks set to start the game against Spezia this evening.

He maintains that in his head the player will have been ready to make a start for Inter weeks ago and he can now be a fresh weapon for the Nerazzurri.

“He is very ready, and certainly not just from today. He would have liked to make his debut immediately, but he came from a long injury and needed time. Inter have been good twice, at catching him and waiting for him. And now they have an extra weapon for the season finale.”

As for what he can offer Inter for the final few games, Andy Brehme said: “By now you know him in Italy and so do we in Germany. He can give strength, speed, crosses and even goals because he scores much more than me.”

It had been rumoured that it was Andy Brehme who told Germany coach Joachim Low to keep an eye on Robin Gosesn when he was still at Atalanta.

“More or less. Joachim and I see each other often, when we are in Sardinia we practically talk only about football and once I said to him: ‘Be aware of this Gosens from Atalanta, he’s really strong’.

When asked if he can be the player to take over from Ivan Perisic, Andreas Brehme suggested that no one needs to take over from the Croatian yet as he is still fit and playing very well.

“But why should there be a post-Perisic? Ivan is showing physical endurance and a 20-year-old’s form, he deserves to stay regardless of age for what he is showing on the pitch.”

Andreas Brehme feels that the win over Juventus recently was decisive for Inter and they can go on to win the title from here.

“It would have been a shame to throw a season away because of a bad period that sooner or later happens to all teams. The victory with Juve was decisive, and now Inter must absolutely score nine points in the next three: if they beat Spezia, Roma and Bologna they’ll win the Scudetto for me.”
