Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi is completely happy with how his team played in this evening’s Coppa Italia win over AC Milan.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the match, the coach expressed his satisfaction with the performance to win the semi-final second leg 3-0, and to show that they’re back at their best.

The Nerazzurri went into this evening’s second leg knowing that, at least on paper, things were balanced on a knife edge given that the first leg last month had ended in a goalless draw.

However, in the first half Inzaghi’s team were close to their very best, showing energy and precision all over the pitch to open up spaces, while Lautaro Martinez scored twice to make sure they made their superiority count.

Now, the Nerazzurri are in the final of the Coppa Italia for the first time in eleven years and have their fate in their own hands in the Serie A title race, and Inzaghi is happy with the manner in which they’ve gotten back into this position.

“I think the guys were fantastic,” he said of their performance. “We played this derby with tactical intelligence, striking at the right moments.”

“We wanted to win this derby which was very important because it was for a place in the Coppa Italia final, and we deserved it based on how we played on the pitch,” he went on.

“This is what we have been working for since July 8,” the coach continued. “We’ve won a final, we will play another in twenty days that matters greatly to us, and then we have the final matches in the league.”

“We’ve done well to keep our heads,” Inzaghi said of how the team have gotten back into form after a poor run of results in February and March.

“In a month and a half of the very demanding schedule between the Supercoppa and the Champions League, we spent a lot physically and mentally, dropping a few points along the way,” he went on.

“We all felt it, but we worked hard and now we go onto this final,” he went on. “We wanted to win at all costs. Now we have this long final run-in in the league, we are chasing the leaders Milan but we want to fight on all fronts.”

Of his decision to start Joaquin Correa in attack alongside Lautaro Martinez, which proved to be a successful one, the coach explained that “I think I have five strikers who are doing well.”

“Each day a coach has to make a lot of decisions,” he added. “In the Supercoppa the five substitutions gave us the win, after the defeat in the derby a month and a half a debate about my substitutions began.”

“I listened, accepted the constructive criticisms and ignored the ones that weren’t,” he added. “Now there’s one match left to play to raise the Coppa and still many matches in the league.”

“They told us that we were favourites, then that we were out of it,” the coach went on. “But it will be a fight to the end between numerous excellent teams.”

On what the team worked on in preparing for the match, Inzaghi stated “On the buildup of possession against Milan. In the four days after Spezia we worked a lot, including with video.”

“We played very well in two derbies and were not rewarded by the results,” he added, “in the first leg we weren’t at our best, partly owing to our commitments across multiple comptetitions. Today we also worked on the out-of-possession phase.”

On winning a Milan derby as Inter coach, Inzaghi stated that “I’m pleased for the wonderful fans. There was an incredible atmosphere from the crowd, we’re happy to have given them satisfaction.”

“Inter had not played in the Coppa Italia final for eleven years, as it had also been a long time since they’d won the league,” he added. “and without the Supercoppa or the round of sixteen in the Champions League.”

“Our fans will also help us on Saturday,” he added, looking ahead to the clash with Roma in Serie A.
