The appointment of referee Simone Sozza to Inter’s Serie A clash with Roma had been the subject of some pre-match controversy, but the official proved his suitability with a very solid display.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who awarded the official a 7/10 score for his performance and noted that he got all the major decisions right and had the right demeanour.

Sozza having been born in Milan was treated with suspicion by some Roma fans who felt that he could be biased towards the Nerazzurri, not least given that the Giallorossi have already had some grievances with referees this season.

However, there was little for either side to complain about in the end as the official put in a mature and professional performance, following the action closely, making major decisions quickly, and keeping the action flowing.

There was no reason to disallow any of the goals scored in the match, and the referee was correct not to award Inter a penalty on either of their appeals.

The “handball” by Giallorossi defender Rick Karsdorp in the area had struck the Dutchman’s chest rather than his arm, whilst the challenge that took out Federico Dimarco was clearly outside the area.
