Legendary former AC Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi feels that while Inter are the strongest team in Italy, their style of football is not progressive or modern enough.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, the former coach suggested that the Nerazzurri remain far behind the elite level of European football stylistically speaking.
Inter had success with quick counterattacks in the first half of their Serie A clash with Roma, but this came after a start to the half which saw both sides probe out the match.
For Sacchi, this tactical approach of waiting for counterattacking opportunities and otherwise allowing the opposition is not the right style for the top level of football.
The former coach advocates for a more pressing-heavy style which aims to dominate matches, and he believes that the Nerazzurri must aim to play more in such a style.
“Inter are the strongest team in Italy,” he said, “but they play football from the 1960s. They playwell, but it’s an ancient style of football, which doesn’t work at the international level.”
He went on that “The match against Roma was a tactical match up to that masterpiece of counterattack. But football can’t just be about counterattacking, it’s knowing how to press, dominate the match, make it hard for the opponent.”
“Scoring goals by counterattacking you succeed once a year,” he suggested, “when you dominate the game it’s easier to score.”
