Former Inter goalkeeper Alberto Fontana feels that the error made by Nerazzurri goalkeeper Andrei Radu in yesterday’s 2-1 Serie A loss to Bologna was the result of not keeping things simple.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, Fontana gave the view that with goalkeepers now expected to participated heavily in a team’s passing game close to their own goal, errors like these can be expected.

Radu got too casual as he looked to control a throw-in by Ivan Perisic, allowing the ball to roll out of his control and into the path of Bologna forward Nicola Sansone who had the easiest of finishes into an empty net.

The Romanian’s lapse came about in a sequence when he was attempting to simply keep possession moving, but it had disastrous consequences for the team.

As Fontana points out, this is much more something that is expected of goalkeepers in the modern game, but errors can also happen because of it.

“When you’re young and you don’t play much, you have to try to keep it as simple as possible,” he said. “Consistency, especially for a guy of his age, is fundamental.”

“For example Donnarumma, who for me is the best player in his position in the world, this season made some errors for this very reason,” he added.

“The goalkeeper is now an active part of the team,” he explained. “In my opinion, goalkeepers don’t change games with their feet, but with their hands and with their personality.”
