Former Inter goalkeeper Fabrizio Ferron has said that Ionut Radu’s error was down to technical ability rather than the team wanting to play out from the back, according to a report in the Italian print media.

Speaking during an interview with Corriere dello Sport, Fabrizio Ferron discussed the mistake that Romanian goalkeeper Ionut Radu made against Bologna which led to Inter losing the game 2-1.

Much has been made of the fact that goalkeepers are asked to do a lot more with the ball at their feet these days but Fabrizio Ferron does not think that is why the error happened.

“Building from the back should not be considered, it is only a technical error. When it happens, the problem is that the goal is right there.”

Ionut Radu has only played one other game for Inter this season and when asked if that is why he made the mistake, Fabrizio Ferron was inclined to agree.

“In general, and the concept should be extended to all players, it is only the pitch that gives continuity. The best gym is always the opponent. It is the timing of the match that makes the difference. The study of situations through videos is important, but then the game knows how to give emotions and motivations that are needed.”

Talking more about the involvement of goalkeepers, he said that they are treated as extra players nowadays to aid the attack.

“Everything is more direct: the manoeuvre does not develop only vertically with the long ball on the attacker as it did before. The goalkeeper becomes one more man, and each team tends to make this construction. For us the work has changed a lot: you participate in the action with strengths and weaknesses. And the relative risks taken.

“Let’s say that the attention and the magnifying glass is immediately on him. But in turn they all got it wrong. Over time the goalkeepers have been able to adapt.”
