Former Lazio goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani has said that whilst Ionut Radu did make a mistake against Inter, Ivan Perisic played a bad pass to him, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking during an interview with Corriere della Sera, Luca Marchegiani came out in support of the Romanian goalkeeper. Many people have blamed Ivan Perisic for throwing the ball to the goalkeeper when it should have just been thrown upfield.

“Between Serie A and B this weekend we have seen many mistakes by the goalkeepers, even if different from each other. Radu made a mistake, but Perisic did not give him a good ball. The Bologna player was already in the area to apply pressure, you could have chosen another solution.

“It was an episode, I hope that it will not become decisive for the Scudetto. He is playing little and the way to redeem himself would be to make an excellent performance, I hope he has the opportunity to play again.”

He also talked about how Ionut Radu is a goalkeeper who knows how to play with the ball at his feet. Despite this, he lost control of the ball and Nicola Sansone was able to prod the ball in to give his Bologna side all three points.

“I have followed Radu since he was in the youth academies and I assure you that he knows how to play the ball very well with his feet. He may have betrayed him precisely because he is too confident. Such a mistake is not enough to say that it is wrong to play from the back.”

Luca Marchegiani highlighted the fact that for a long time Inter have had a different approach to goalkeepers than a team like Juventus. The Bianconeri value having a high-quality backup goalkeeper whereas Inter have always stuck with Samir Handanovic playing nearly every game.

“Having a reliable second who has a similar performance to the owner is very important. In this sense, Inter have chosen a different path than Juventus who has always alternated great goalkeepers, in the Nerazzurri, there is always Handanovic.

“Playing little can encourage certain mistakes, in training you don’t have the same perception or tension as the match. The defeat is heavy, but Inter have not lost it yet.”
