Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku could possibly return to Inter during the summer transfer window, but it would come as a massive surprise given the Nerazzurri’s strategy for the market.
This according to SportItalia transfer market expert Alfredo Pedulla, who reports on Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it that the Nerazzurri would not be a very likely destination for the 28-year-old.
Lukaku’s unsettled situation at Chelsea has meant that he could be on his way out even after only one season in the Premier League.
The Belgian has admitted that his preference would be for a return to Inter, although as Pedulla notes this would only be one possibility among many for the striker.
A move for Lukaku would be very financially difficult for the Nerazzurri, and would not be in line with their approach of meeting financial targets and rebuilding the squad, so for Pedulla it would not seem to be on the cards.
“He cost €115 million and he has a salary of about 15 a season,” he writes of Lukaku. “Technically even if the richest owner in the world arrived and could afford to send him out on loan, it would be a move that would defy logic.”
“He would give up part of the salary only to return to Inter,” he goes on, “but let’s face it. the transfer market is full of surprises, though it would be a move not at all in line with Marotta’s tried-and-tested strategies.”
He writes that “Today Lukaku is almost everyone’s Plan B – Barcelona if they fail to sign Lewandowski, Bayern if Lewandowski were to leave, maybe Conte if Tottenham had not discovered the new and motivated Kane.”
“Romelu’s situation is one that will drag on for a long time,” he predicts.
