Former Serie A referee Luca Marelli feels that the penalty awarded to Inter in their 2-1 Serie A win over Udinese yesterday was undoubtedly a correct decision.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, Marelli called the decision a “clear penalty” and explained why he felt that this was the case.

Nerazzurri striker Edin Dzeko went down in the Udinese penalty under the challenge of Bianconeri defender Pablo Mari area late on in the first half yesterday, and he immediately appealed for the spot kick.

Referee Daniele Chiffi was initially unmoved, but then took advice from the VAR who suggested that he have another look at the incident on the monitor.

Chiffi then pointed to the spot without much hesitation, with Lautaro Martinez failing to score but then putting away the rebound to make it 2-0, and Marelli feels that this was absolutely the correct decision.

“The Udinese defender never touched the ball,” he said,”Dzeko anticipates it and then gets caught on his right foot. It’s a fairly clear penalty.”
