Serie A CEO Luigi Di Siervo expects that the next Supercoppa Italiana will be held in Saudi Arabia and could include more than two teams rather than being a one-off match.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Radio Anch’io Lo Sport, Di Siervo explained the league’s plans for a new format for the competition moving forward.

The initial plans had been for this season’s edition of the Supercoppa to be held in Saudi Arabia, but after several rounds of meetings a final agreement could not be arrived at on the details for the arrangement.

Accordingly, the match which pitted last season’s Serie A champions Inter against Coppa Italia winners Juventus and saw the Nerazzurri prevail 2-1 in extra time was instead held at the San Siro in mid-January.

However, the league are still intending to hold the competition in Saudi Arabia moving forward, and Di Siervo explained that the intention is to move the competition there for next season.

“The next Supercoppa Italiana final will be held in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

“It’s not possible to get out of the current contract that we’ve inherited,” he added, “we’re working on a model that could include more teams and promote Serie A abroad.”
