Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti feels that Inter have what it takes to be one of the foremost teams in European football, but only if they can find their best level more.

Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, Sconcerti gave the view that the Nerazzurri’s 4-2 win over Empoli yesterday evening showed the quality that can make them an elite side as well as the inconsistency that keeps them from really reaching that level on a sustained basis.

Inter piled on the possession and chances to make sure they took three points from their clash with newly-promoted Empoli, good value for the emphatic 4-2 scoreline in the end.

They did not make it easy on themselves, however, having to come back from 2-0 down after allowing the Tuscans to race to a 2-0 lead in the first half.

For Sconcerti, this was a microcosm of how the Nerazzurri have the capability of playing at the highest level but must still put some of their more erratic tendencies behind them.

“Naive to give Empoli such gaping spaces in the first half,” he writes. “The disaffection that we saw against  Bologna was on display again, an aimless rhythm, the impression that they were at sea in the match.”

“Then the great awakening,” he continues. “If they always knew how to play like themselves, Inter would already be a team at the top of the European level.”
