Legendary former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli feels that winning the 1978 Coppa Italia final with the Nerazzurri was an important moment in giving him a winning mentality and confidence in important matches.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Altobelli reflected on the significance of winning the cup final as the Nerazzurri prepare to face Juventus in this season’s edition on Wednesday evening at the Stadio Olimpico.
Altobelli would go on to win Serie A with the Nerazzurri in the 1979-80 season as well as the Coppa Italia in the 1981-82 season, scoring over two hundred goals for the club along the way.
It was in 1978 that the legendary former striker marked the beginning of his winning silverware, at the end of his first season in an Inter shirt, helping the team to a 2-1 win over Napoli in the final.
Now, the current Nerazzurri team can bring a similar winning mentality into the team if they are to beat Juventus on Wednesday evening.
Altobelli reflected that “It can be said that on that evening, in Rome, I learned to win in finals, not just to play in them.”
“Four years later, I raised a second Coppa Italia, and then after a few weeks I also triumphed at the World Cup, which was thanks to that evening in Rome,” he added.
