Legendary former Inter defender Marco Materazzi feels that the team’s 2010 Coppa Italia victory was a positive omen in the direction of that season’s legendary Treble.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, the Treble-winner recalled how the victory in the cup gave the team belief that there were even greater things in store that season.

The Nerazzurri won the only European treble in their history in 2010, grabbing the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia as well as prevailing 2-0 against Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League to win every trophy on offer for them.

The victory in the Coppa Italia was the first piece of silverware collected by Inter, and according to Materazzi it sent an important message along the team’s path to making more history in Italy and in Europe over the rest of the season.

“Mourinho built a team that could triumph over all adversity, which we did precisely on May 5th, almost a sign of fate,” he said.

“Twenty incredible days began from there,” he continued, “so when you make fun of that day in 2002 you should always add that eight years later, on the same date, Inter were putting up the first brick of the Treble.”

He gave the view that “Among other things, the Coppa Italia has great value in itself for us. Under Mancini, we were able to break a long drought by winning this trophy in 2004-05 and build the foundations for a team that won everything.”
