Former Inter coach Marcello Lippi feels that his time as Nerazzurri coach has been unfairly assessed and that he did the best that he could in the circumstances.

Speaking in a lecture at the University of International Studies in Rome, as reported by FCInter1908, Lippi defended the fourth-place finish that he achieved while in charge of Inter.

Lippi is much more associated with his two lengthy and successful spells in charge of Juventus, as well as his legendary 2006 World Cup win with Italy, than he is with his time coaching Inter.

However, the Italian also had a spell on the bench at Inter, taking over for the 1999-2000 season between two his two long periods coaching the Bianconeri.

Lippi did not manage to guide the Nerazzurri to trophies the way he had done at other periods in his career, but as he argued, the team were more stable they had been during the chaotic period prior to his arrival.

“My time at Inter has been described as a failure, but I finished fourth,” he argued. “The season before they had finished eighth and changed coaches four times.”
