Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu will be desperate to avoid the personal “nightmare scenario” of his former side AC Milan beating the Nerazzurri to the Serie A title this season.

This according to today”s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who suggest that the 28-year-old will be especially keen to overtake the Rossoneri over the final two matches of the season.

On the pitch, Calhanoglu’s move to Inter has been a success, with the player who coach Simone Inzaghi pushed for as a replacement for Christian Eriksen last summer having shown that he is a good fit for the team and having shone in the starting eleven after a couple months of adaptation.

However, there is no escaping the fact for Calhanoglu that he joined the Nerazzurri as Scudetto winners from the team who finished second to them last season, and now risks finishing second with them to his old side.

Ultimately, Calhanoglu is not likely to regret his decision to move to Inter rather than accept a contract offer from AC Milan, and he has plenty of time to go on and win trophies with the Nerazzurri given the form he’s shown already.

However, in the immediate term the possibility of finishing second two seasons in a row with two different teams is one that will sting for the midfielder.
