Inter defender Stefan de Vrij feels that the team always backed themselves to win yesterday evening’s Coppa Italia final against Juventus even when things looked to be going against them.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the 30-year-old stressed that the Nerazzurri never expected a straightforward match and never lost faith that they could get the result and lift the trophy.

Inter got off to a dream start with an early goal from Nicolo Barella, but from there on out it was the Bianconeri who forced the issue as they had done in the league meeting between the teams at the start of last month.

The Bianconeri were rewarded for their efforts with a quickfire double towards the start of the second half to go ahead, but Inter slowly worked their way back into it and equalized, before scoring two goals in extra time to seal the victory.

De Vrij said that “We’ve very happy, we spent a lot of time on the pitch celebrating. We always believed that we could win right until the end. We knew it’d be tough.”
