Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that the Nerazzurri’s season was damaged by the fact that they had to wait several months to play their Serie A match against Bologna scheduled for the end of January.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bergomi noted that while coach Simone Inzaghi would not wish the use the postponement as an excuse, it played an important role in how the team’s season played out.

The Nerazzurri had been set to face Bologna away as their first match back from the winter break, but an outbreak of COVID cases in the Rossoblu’s squad meant that the match could not go ahead as scheduled.

After months of uncertainty, the Nerazzurri finally travelled to Emilia-Romagna to play the match, having had it as a game in hand lingering over the table for months.

Inter had the chance to go top of the table on that evening, but they lost the match instead and are now heading into the final day of the season needing AC Milan to drop points to have any chance of catching up at the top of the table.

“Inzaghi has a regret, but he would never admit it,” Bergomi said, “playing a game in hand is different than playing Sunday together with the rest of the league.”

“For a long time, you think it could be three points in hand,” he went on. “In Bologna they did not manage well, and also the attitude of the players throughout the match was not positive.”
