Inter have been in contact with representatives of Roma midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan for around a month already about a possible free transfer.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri have been considering the possibility of signing the 33-year-old as a backup to Hakan Calhanoglu in their squad for some time.

Mkhitaryan looks likely to be available on a free transfer during the summer transfer window, as while the Giallorossi have not given up on extending his deal with a new two-year contract, no agreement has yet been found.

Inter are looking to exploit free transfer opportunities during the summer to strengthen their squad without making significant investments, and Mkhitaryan’s profile is one they like as he could deputize for Calhanoglu and his quality is proven within Serie A.

The contacts are already underway to try and sign the Armenian, who is not currently close to agreeing a new deal with Roma, and the Nerazzurri could move quickly.
