AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali feels that the Rossoneri have caught up to Inter after not having been able to quite compete with them last season.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, Tonali gave the view that the derby in February gave Milan a sense that they were no longer in Inter’s shadow and gave them the confidence to go on and win for the Serie A title.

Milan had finished second to Inter in the 2020-21 season, but in the campaign just gone the places were reversed with the title race going down to the final and the Rossoneri getting their hands on the Scudetto.

According to Tonali, Milan had been behind in the previous season, and the Nerazzurri were deserved winners, but they grew and improved so that that gap no longer exists between the city rivals at the top of the Serie A table.

“Last season Inter were stronger than us, without a doubt, and we knew it would be difficult to win ,” he said. “Moreover, this season we were not the strongest team in the league, but we have shown that we can do anything.”

Tonali added that “The second derby gave us an extra boost. Against them we no longer feel afraid of the derby, and we feel that we always have a chance to win. We play on equal footing because we know we’re strong.”
