Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been targeted for his ability to slot in to all of the three roles in Inter’s midfield ahead of next season.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri are signing the 33-year-old on a free transfer to add depth across the midfield and believe that he can be proficient in all of the position.

Mkhitaryan has moved into a central midfield role through his three seasons at Roma, from an attacking midfield or winger position for much of his time at Borussia Dortmund and in the Premier League.

Inter have worked quickly to identify the Armenian as a significant free transfer opportunity and are close to completing a deal to bring him in.

The 33-year-old is capable of playing in an attacking midfield or mezzala position that would enable him to provide depth behind the likes of Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella, important given that several departures are expected in the Nerazzurri’s midfield this summer.

Not only this, however, but the Nerazzurri also see him as a player who can adeptly add a quality option in the regista position behind regular starter Marcelo Brozovic.
