Young Zurich FC and Italy forward Wilfried Gnonto has opened up about his decision to leave Inter and move to Zurich in 2020.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Rai Sport, the 18-year-old explained that while he felt happy at the Nerazzurri, he felt that the move away to a different club was a necessary step in his career development.

Gnonto made headlines with his debut for the Italian senior team yesterday, coming off the bench to assist Lorenzo Pellegrini’s opener for the Azzurri in a 1-1 Nations League draw with Germany.

The 18-year-old’s form with Zurich, helping to power them to winning the Swiss title in emphatic fashion, earned him a call-up from Italy coach Roberto Mancini, perhaps a reflection that he had made the right decision in joining the Swiss side.

Gnonto had been in the Nerazzurri’s youth setup, but decided to leave to seek out a path forward within the senior game at Zurich, something which he explained that he does not regret.

“At that age you have to play,” he said. “I felt at home at Inter, I knew everyone. But at a certain point you have to take risks and make difficult decisions. Fortunately, my parents and my agents helped me by making everything easier.”
