Former Inter goalkeeper Tommaso Berni believes that Romelu Lukaku is making the right decision by re-joining Inter on loan from Chelsea after just one season away.

Speaking to Italian news outlet L’Interista, Berni gave his thoughts on the sensational return of the Belgian, emphasizing that the player has chosen well to come back to the team where he belongs in the former keeper’s view.

Lukaku has been a driving force in making an improbable return to Inter happen, with the move having looked very difficult for a long time but the player’s insistence having been key to convincing both clubs to sit down and agree a deal.

Now, the 29-year-old will play in a Nerazzurri shirt once again for at least one more season, and he will be hoping that he can pick up where he left off last time he was playing at the Giuseppe Meazza rather than continuing in the kind of form he showed in the Premier League.

“I would tell him that returning to Inter is the best choice he can make,” Berni reflected, “as long as it makes him happy. I know how much he cares about Inter, I know how much he’s felt like he belongs at Inter and what he’s achieved there.”

“Then I would tell him to get down to business and to continue to demonstrate what a great player he is,” he added.

“Obviously we’re all happy if Romelu returns,” he said. “He’s made a beautiful gesture and I think it’s one of the first times that we’ve seen a gesture like this, we have to appreciate it.”

Berni suggested that “Now he’ll have to do even better than the season that he won the Scudetto with Conte. In short, he has a big responsibility, but we know that Big Rom has broad shoulders.”
