Inter and AC Milan could go head-to-head for the signature of Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi this summer, though both clubs would only want him for a backup role.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the 34-year-old wants to join a club in the Champions League and that both the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri are considering a move for him.

Acerbi looks set to depart from the Bianconeri this summer, and the former Sassuolo defender is keen on playing at a high level wherever his next destination is, even if that means not having a regular starting role.

Accordingly, a move to a club currently in the Champions League would be his preference, and so a move to one of the two teams in Milan could be logical.

Both Inter and Milan are considering the 34-year-old to bolster their squad, though not for a regular starting position.
