Inter captain Samir Handanovic has signed a contract extension until the end of June 2023.

This is confirmed by the Nerazzurri on their official site, where they announce that they have extended the 37-year-old’s time at the club by one season.

Handanovic joined Inter from Udinese in the summer of 2012, with today being the tenth anniversary of his move to the Nerazzurri, and has served as club captain since 2019 when he took over the armband from striker Mauro Icardi.

The Slovenian lifted his first trophy in a Nerazzurri shirt when he captained the team to the Serie A title in the 2020-21 season, and then last campaign added the Supercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia to his trophy cabinet.

The 37-year-old has also won 81 caps for the Slovenian national team, although since 2015 he has served as deputy to Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak for his country.

Inter have also signed Andre Onana on a free transfer from Ajax this summer, and the Cameroonian is widely expected to be the long-term successor to Handanovic in goal, but the captain will stay for at least one further season whilst Onana settles in.
