Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi is pleased with what he saw from his team in today’s friendly match against Lugano, their first of the preseason.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportItalia after the match, the coach spoke about the tactical experiment of playing with a Number Ten playmaker behind the strikers, and also praised the display of newly-signed midfielder Kristjan Asllani.
Inter got their preseason campaign off to a good start with a 4-1 win over Lugano, and more important than the result was the nature of the performance and what was shown by many of Inzaghi’s players.
The coach has only had a few days to work with the squad on the training pitch so far, but already he has managed to put his imprint in the form of some tactical tweaks and experiments, whilst Asllani has settled in and made a positive impression following his move from Empoli.
Asked his feelings following the match, Inzaghi replied “Good, because we’ve only been working together for four days but we already played a serious and organized match.”
“I’m happy with what I have seen,” he continued, “we’re preparing day by day to reach August 13 at our best.”
Of the reignited partnership between Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez in attack, the coach said that “Romelu is a top player and he and Lautaro know each other very well.”
“But we also saw Joaquin Correa who did well,” he was quick to noted, “and then Edin Dzeko. We were lucky enough to bring Romelu back here, I’m very satisfied. Now we have to grow and to improve.”
Regarding the usage of Correa as a trequartista behind the strikers, he said that “It’s a solution. Our system is different, but with so many great forwards available I can change my setup from time to time.”
“I’m very satisfied with the attack,” the coach noted, “last season we had the best attack in Serie A and now we’ve added Lukaku. Now we’re waiting to see what the transfer market brings us across all positions.”
Asked about the club’s reported interest in Torino defender Bremer, Inzaghi said that “I’m always in contact with the directors, who always do their jobs excellently.”
“We need to find a replacement for Ranocchia who can complete the defensive positions for a back three,” he added.
Of the club’s signing of Asllani, Inzaghi noted that “We wanted him, in his first few days here he’s shown great personality despite being very young.”
“He will have Brozovic ahead of him,” he noted, “but he will be an added value for us throughout the season.”
And regarding the appointment of his brother Filippo as head coach of Reggina, Inzaghi said that “It seemed strange to me that he was not at any club already.”
“Now he’s enthusiastic,” he continued, “it won’t be easy because he’s joining a club with a new owner.”
“He’ll have to keep the team in Serie B in his first season, and then he can aspire to more ambitious goals,” he stated.
