Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted that he would have liked to get more out of Romelu Lukaku during their time together, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking to the English press in Los Angeles whilst on Chelsea’s pre-season tour, via FCInternews, Thomas Tuchel took some questions about his time with Romelu Lukaku who has recently moved to Inter on loan.

He first pointed out that he never said that he wanted the Belgian to leave the club and he maintains that had he stayed, they would have worked together to iron out any tactical differences that they have.

“There was never a meeting where I said I didn’t want him anymore. On the contrary, if he had stayed we would have done everything to put him in the best physical and tactical conditions. There was always the possibility of him staying but Lukaku was clear in wanting to leave and the club took that decision.”

He then explained that he does wish that he could have gotten more good form and goals out of Romelu Lukaku but the choice was made by the player and the club that they should part ways.

“I’m clearly not happy with how it went, maybe it would have taken a bit more time, better form, more adaptation to our game, I would have liked to get more out of him. This we will never know, once there was an offer on the table the ownership made their choice and I gave my OK.”

Romelu Lukaku joined Chelsea last summer from Inter for €115 million but has returned on loan.
