Former Cagliari and SPAl head coach Leonardo Semplici believes that Inter have improved during the summer transfer window even before the arrival of Romelu Lukaku on loan from Chelsea.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportItalia, Semplici gave the view that the Belgian’s return strengthens the attack but that the Nerazzurri have already reinforced the team, and also suggested that Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic would be an ideal replacement should Milan Skriniar leave.

Inter made one of the most high-profile signings not just in Italy but in all of European football this summer when Lukaku made the shock return on loan just one season after he joined Chelsea in a massive money move.

Many doubts have been raised about the Belgian given his erratic form in the Premier League, but Semplici feels that he can still be the same player who led Inter to the Scudetto, whilst he also thinks that the 29-year-old is far from the only aspect that has raised the team’s level.

“His characteristics make the difference in Italy, but then you also need the right mentality,” the coach stated. “Even before the return of the Belgian, Inter have improved from last year, now they are even stronger and have added quality in attack.”

Semplici also gave his thoughts on Semplici, stating that “Milenkovic would be the most suitable candidate to replace Skriniar in the event that he leaves, he’s grown across recent seasons at Fiorentina.”

“He’s physically strong and has acquired important experience,” he said of the Serb, “he’s ready for a great team.”
