Inter are thinking about signing forward Dries Mertens on a free transfer to take the place of Alexis Sanchez in their squad.
This according to Italian news outlet Repubblica.it, who claim that the Belgian is a target for Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi to flesh out the attack when Sanchez leaves, with the player set to be available following a departure from his former club Napoli.
Metens’s exit from Napoli has been confirmed, with the 35-year-old leaving at the end of his contract after being unable to agree an extension with the Partenopei, ending his nine-year stay in Naples.
Where the Belgian will go next is not yet known, but if he were to stay in Italy, Repubblica claim that Inzaghi would like to sign him.
Sanchez looks set to depart from Inter this summer once the Nerazzurri are able to convince the Chilean on a termination of his contract with a severance payment, but Mertens could come in and play a similar second striker role in their squad.
