Inter forward Joaquin Correa feels that the team must work to get back to full match fitness after a somewhat flat display in their 1-0 loss to Lens in a friendly.
Speaking to InterTV after the match the 27-year-old admitted that the team are still working to find the extra step and the energy for the season but suggested that this is to be expected, while he also noted that he and the other forwards are working on developing chemistry with Romelu Lukaku.
Inter are now three matches into their preseason campaign, with their aim not being to get any particular results from the friendly matches, but rather to get themselves physically fit for the upcoming season.
In this respect, the friendly against Lens was somewhat of a mixed bag, as the team showed how far they still have to go to be prepared for the season, but also showed flashes of quality and chemistry to build on over the next three weeks, particularly in the second half.
“It’s the start of the season where we have to get back to our best, we’re training a lot,” Correa said. “They were fresher than us, which made the difference.”
He continued that “We have to keep working, there’s a long way to go and we have to stay united. Today we happened to lose, so we must improve and move forward.”
Correa stated that “We’re not all fit yet, we have heavy legs, but that’s normal, the coach told us that we have to keep working.”
“We need to try to be fresher in our next matches as we move to the start of the season,” he said.
Regarding the reintergation of striker Lukaku into the team, he stated that “It’s going well, we’re trying to find chemistry together. Today we didn’t succeed but we still have more matches in which to improve.”
