Inter find themselves at something of a crossroads regarding their defensive strategy, as they decide whether to target a high-level player like Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic or Atalanta’s Merih Demiral, or focus on a low-cost option.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri are leaning towards a higher-level option at the moment but that things are complicated by the increasing likelihood that Milan Skriniar will stay at the club.

With Paris Saint-Germain’s interest in Skriniar having gone cold in recent days and Inter now wanting to keep hold of the 27-year-old, they are thinking about how they want to reinforce their defense.

The plan had looked to be to sell Skriniar for a large fee and sign Torino’s Bremer, but with Bremer off to Juventus and Skriniar staying they would instead keep their first-choice backline from last season intact.

Another defender needs to be signed to add depth in the defensive positions following the departure of Andrea Ranocchia, but the profile sought isn’t clear.

Fiorentina’s Milenkovic and Atalanta’s Demiral are very much on the Nerazzurri’s radar, and could be moved for by investing part of the fee for a sale of Andrea Pinamonti, who is also a target for La Dea which could help in negotiations for Demiral.

Inter CEO Beppe Marotta and Sporting Director Piero Ausilio are slightly more inclined towards moving for a player like Milenkovic or Demiral, but at the same time considering a low-cost opportunity.

Particularly later during the transfer window, the Nerazzurri’s directors would be prepared to see what options are available at a low cost in order to ensure depth behind a strong first-choice back three whilst spending little.
