Former Inter, AC Milan, and Napoli CEO Marco Fassone believes that the last ten years have show that winning isn’t realistic within football without spending.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Radio Marte, Fassone noted that the successes of all of the Nerazzurri, the Rossoneri, and Juventus in recent years have tended to come off of the back of spending by the clubs.

Financial restrictions and sustainability have been something of a theme within Italian football in recent season, with Inter’s financial targets well-known but most of their rivals within Serie A also facing tight financial situations.

This has not always been the case, however, with a report yesterday revealing the Inter and Milan are the two teams to have had the most spent by their owners since 2010, which has certainly played a role in the fact that they are the two most recent Scudetto winners.

Fassone observed, “If Juve, Milan, and Inter have reinvested more than anyone else in the last ten years, it means that if you want to win trophies, costs must be higher than revenues.”

He continued that “The midtable clubs manage to generate profit,s and Napoli has an economic profile comparable to Roma, the difference lies in the sporting results – better than those of Napoli over the last ten years.”

“Last season [Napoli owner Aurelio] De Laurentiis tried to take a step forward, but they didn’t manage to win the title,” he added.
