Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has said that the Nerazzurri have been working since July 6 to win the Scudetto and he is happy to have Romelu Lukaku back, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.
Speaking during an interview with DAZN to preview Inter’s campaign, via FCInternews, the former Lazio coach made it clear that the work started much earlier than most may expect to make sure that the Serie A title goes to Inter next June.
He was asked if this season is one of revenge after AC Milan took the Scudetto last season but Simone Inzaghi played that sentiment down.
“I wouldn’t say so, I would have put a huge signature to have the season we have had. We did very, very well; we played beautiful football for a long part of the season, so I’m very satisfied.
“It would have been an incredible year with the Scudetto that we missed by two points, we’ll try to do it this year knowing that we have rivals who will want to do the same and who have strengthened. We have been working since July 6 with that goal in mind.”
One major bonus for the coach this season is that he has got Romelu Lukaku back after the Belgian was sold just two weeks into Simone Inzaghi’s time at Inter. He showed how happy he is to have him back.
“He’s a guy who has a lot of enthusiasm, last year he made another choice but then there was the opportunity to come back and the club was good at taking it.
“I am very pleased to have him here, last year we were the best attack in the league, now with Romelu we will have new solutions.”
He was also asked if he is happy for lots of people to be naming Inter as their Scudetto favourite heading into the new campaign.
“Last year after the various sales there was no talk of Inter, then we did so well in 3-4 months of playing well that everyone pointed to us as the favourites.
“There are so many teams that have spent much more than Inter that will aim to win.”
He also highlighted the fact that having a close relationship with the owners is very important, saying: “That certainly, having a close ownership and management is enormously pleasing because they support us every day, never letting us lack anything.”
On addressing the gap between Inter and AC Milan next season, Simone Inzaghi said: “We saw last year, we met four times: once we won, once they won and then there were two draws.
“In the Cup we did better, they did very well in the league because they did something extraordinary.”
