Former Spezia and Lecce Sporting Director Mauro Meluso feels that the view that Inter stumbled by failing to sign Paulo Dybala and Bremer is harsh on the realities of the club.

Speaking to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Meluso gave the view that the expectation that the Nerazzurri ought to have signed all of their top targets this summer was more fantasy football than reality and that the club’s directors have had an excellent transfer window within reasons.

Inter’s summer had been seemingly going exactly as they had wanted for much of June, culminating in the blockbuster return of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, but then things went off the rails during the past couple weeks.

A failure to sign Bremer from Torino was compounded by the fact that he joined major rivals Juventus and left the Nerazzurri rethinking their willingness to sell Milan Skriniar, whilst the failure of their lengthy pursuit of Paulo Dybala also raised some doubts.

“People think the transfer market is fantasy football,” Meluso stated. “The market is a puzzle, there are key junctures. And Inter have done an extraordinary job, they will still be among the favourites.”

He continued that “There are no more resources like their used to be. We’ll carry the effects of the pandemic with us for a long time, and therefore Inter, who a few years ago could make world-class signings, must be more cautious.”

“However, I believe that Marotta and Ausilio have shown great skill to make great purchases,” he added.
