Inter don’t consider former Napoli forward Dries Mertens to be a serious target, as they don’t feel that the attack needs to be strengthened.

This according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin, who reported in a tweet that the Belgian is not on the Nerazzurri’s radar, and that they are fine with going into the upcoming season with the four senior forwards available in their squad.

Mertens could represent an experienced option at a reasonable price for teams within Italy now that he is available on a free transfer following his departure from Napoli, and Inter have been among the teams linked with an interest.

However, the Nerazzurri already have four players in the attacking position ready to compete for two starting roles in attacking in the usual 3-5-2 formation, and so the forward areas are not an obvious area of need for them for next season.

Biasin confirms this, tweeting that “Inter aren’t thinking about Mertens, not because they don’t see him as a quality player but because they’re happy with the four forwards they already have.”

“It should also be added that if the goal is to reduce the wage bill, it would make no sense to add a 35-year-old with a salary of 3-4 million per season as a fifth forward,” he notes.
