Inter could decide to sign another left wingback to complete their business this transfer window rather than a defender, and it could depend on the opportunities that arise in the market.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri could reshuffle the backline and look to reinforce the left flank instead of signing a like-for-like replacement for Andrea Ranocchia in defense.

Inter have been looking for a low-cost signing to back up Stefan de Vrij next season, with Andrea Ranocchia having been the Dutchman’s deputy last campaign but now departed for Monza.

The profile sought for this last signing would be an out-and-out central defender, but in reality both Alessandro Bastoni and Milan Skriniar can shift to this position when de Vrij is unavailable, and there are options like Danilo D’Ambrosio, Federico Dimarco, and even Matteo Darmian who can then cover the wide areas.

If this were to be made a regular role for these wide players, then the club would look to sign a wingback instead of a more defensively-minded player, and the targeted area would likely be on the left where Robin Gosens’s fitness concerns have raised some doubts.
