Former Inter wingback Ivan Perisic has revealed that his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer at the beginning of the summer transfer window only took a couple of days.

Speaking to UK broadcaster Sky Sports, the 33-year-old explained that once the contacts with the London club began he didn’t need very much convincing on his decision, and that the opportunity to continue playing in the Champions League was key for him.

Perisic’s contract with Inter ran out at the end of June, and while the Nerazzurri had hoped to extend the Croat’s deal he decided to opt for a new challenge instead.

The former Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayern Munich winger will reunite with Antonio Conte, with whom he worked for one season at Inter when the club won the Serie A title, and who first converted him to the wingback role regularly, in the English capital.

“I think our first contact was in March,” Perisic explained, “and the second one was in April when I think they won against Arsenal, and it was obvious that maybe they’re going to reach the Champions League.”

He continued that “I always wanted to play in the Champions League and my wish was also to try to come to the Premier League.

“When they reached the Champions League, we spoke and the deal was done in two days, and it was much easier,” Perisic concluded.
