Young Inter defender Alessandro Fontanarosa could have a role to play for the Nerazzurri’s senior team given the lack of depth in defense.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInter1908, who report that Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi would like for the 19-year-old to be available to ensure that there is adequate cover across the backline.

Inter look set to head into next season with the starting back three from last campaign intact in the form of Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij, and Alessandro Bastoni unless Skriniar is sold.

Andrea Ranocchia left for Monza on a free transfer at the beginning of the summer, leaving the only backups currently in the squad as converted fullbacks like Federico Dimarco, Matteo Darmian, and Danilo D’Ambrosio.

Dimarco could be used as more of a wingback rather than a defender depending on the circumstances in the squad, and despite the versatile Darmian having been tested out as part of the back three by Inzaghi in preseason this is not seen as his main role.

Accordingly, the club are targeting a low-cost arrival who can shore up the defense and provide a real backup option to de Vrij, but in addition to this, Inzaghi could want Fontanarosa in the team.

The 19-year-old made his preseason debut already due to a lack of senior players available in defense at the time, and he could split his time between the Primavera and senior teams during the upcoming campaign.
