Former Inter, Roma, and Bologna winger Francesco Moriero believes that Inter are one of the favourites for the Serie A title but that they will have to work hard and suffer for it.

Speaking to Italian news outlet FCInter1908, the 53-year-old gave his predictions with just a few days left to go before the start of the season, and also stated that he believes that keeping hold of defender Milan Skriniar is undoubtedly the right choice.

Inter will open their Serie A season on Saturday when they travel to Apulia to face Lecce, and from there things will only get tougher.

However, Moriero believes that, particularly if they are able to keep hold of Skriniar for the season, the Nerazzurri will have the quality as well as the mentality to go all the way and win the Scudetto this season.

He said, “Now they’re suffering a bit defensively despite having the same backline as last season, and so they’ll have to rediscover their cutting edge defensively.”

“However,” he stressed, “preseason in August doesn’t matter, and they’re still the favourites to win.”

Of Skriniar, Moriero said that “Skriniar is a fundamental part of Inter’s backline. Inzaghi is doing everything to keep him because in my opinion it wouldn’t be easy to find a proper replacement at this point who would be able to guarantee the same defensive balance.”

Of the Nerazzurri’s opening match, the former winger predicted that “Away to Lecce won’t be easy for anyone this season. There will be 30,000 spectators urging the team on who will identify with the fans’ passion, and using all the dark arts and not always playing a beautiful game.”

“To be safe in Serie A you need heart and determination,” he said, “this is what I expect to see from them.”
