Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has said that Romelu Lukaku created an emotional bond with Inter, according got a report in the Italian media today.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport today, Roberto Martinez discussed the Belgian striker along with other players in Serie A who could be a part of his squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He was asked whether he is surprised by the fact that Romelu Lukaku has returned to Inter and he made it clear that he is not surprised at all due to the bond that the striker has with the club.

“I’ve known Romelu for years, I’m absolutely not surprised by his choice and his determination to return to Milan whatever the cost: it was what he wanted.

“He gave a lot to Inter already in his first experience and, between the Europa League final and the Scudetto, he created an emotional bond with the Inter fans that has never been broken.”

He went on to explain that this spell at Inter will be different because this time, it is about more than just the footballing project. It is about his relationship with the club on a human level too.

“More than a sporting project. He has gone in search of emotions that are independent of victories.

“We are talking about heart and not just football. Then I see him absolutely focused on what he wants, which is to win with the team he loves: he will give everything to prove that he is as decisive as the first time.”

It was put to the coach that Romelu Lukaku has only ever been able to reach his highest level when playing for either Antonio Conte, or Belgium.

Roberto Martinez thinks that he will be able to adapt to what Simone Inzaghi wants him to do this season.

“Romelu is a very modern and complete striker. He adapts to different systems, it’s not true that you only play one way with him.

“He can be the reference in a quick game directed towards the forwards, he can be useful in physical battles, but he is also good at combining with his teammates in a manoeuvred system like in Belgium.

“That is why he will adapt well to a new coach and teammates who have changed in the meantime: I have no doubts about the impact he will have on Inter and Serie A.”
