Legendary former Inter, Juventus, Parma, and Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro feels that Inter and AC Milan are the teams in the strongest position to win the Serie A title this season.

Speaking to Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, the World Cup winner gave his Scudetto predictions, whilst he also named Inter’s signing of Romelu Lukaku as the signing of the summer so far.

The season is now virtually underway, with both defending champions Milan and last season’s second-placed finishers Inter set to kick off their Serie A campaigns against Udinese and Lecce respectively this evening.

It will be a long campaign, broken up by each team’s commitments in the Champions League as well as domestic cup competitions, plus the unprecedented winter World Cup break.

Both teams will have a long way to go in a season likely to have just as many twists and turns as the last one, but Cannavaro feels that the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri are the two teams who are best-placed for the title.

“I’d be inclined to say Inter and then Milan, or Milan and then Inter, and then Roma are closing in, or in any case not too far off,” he said.

“The past matters, and Pioli and Inzaghi start with a good advantage,” Cannavaro argued. “And of course everyone has signed new players which will affect things.”

And asked about possible signings of the summer, the former defender said that “Lukaku’s return has a real weight, although I’m also always cautious on players making returns like that.”
