Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga feels that Inter’s strong performances last season after a difficult summer transfer window show that simple predictions can’t be made about how teams will perform in a season.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Zenga argued that it would be essentially useless to predict whether the Nerazzurri will be stronger or weaker this season than they were last time around, as is proved by how they defied the predictions last campaign.

Inter have had an eye-catching transfer window with several players arriving to try and build on coach Simone Inzaghi’s work last season, not least the return of Romelu Lukaku in attack.

There will be significant expectations around the Nerazzurri for this reason, as there will also be around many of their rivals at the top of the Serie A table who have reason for optimism after some of the signings that they’ve made.

However, Zenga noted that “Last season everyone said that they’d drop off without Lukaku and Hakimi but then they had a good season. We can’t declare who the strongest and weakest teams will be in advance.

He also spoke about the defense, stating that “When I read about Bremer, the kid-like fan in me imagined a Skriniar-Bremer-Bastoni defense and was calm.”

“Losing Skriniar would become very complicated,” he continued. “So I think that nothing more will be done as far as sales, but we also need a new central defender.”
