Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi believes that his team showed the necessary spirit in their late win against Lecce in their Serie A opener, but that the match also showed some of the things that they still have to work on.
Speaking to InterTV after the match, the coach gave his immediate reaction to a match which saw his team struggle at times before finally snatching the three points in the final seconds.
Inter will hope that they can have many more comfortable evenings this season than the one that they had in Apulia in their first match of the season.
The Nerazzurri got off to a perfect start with a goal from Romelu Lukaku just a couple minutes into his second debut for the club, but then things got away from them a bit.
The home side equalized early in the second half, and after that the Nerazzurri never really looked comfortable, but they never gave up and kept trying to put their stamp on proceedings, being rewarded with a late winner by Denzel Dumfries.
“We had a little less time to work because we usually start the season later,” Inzaghi said, “we waited for the guys who returned on July 13.”
“Today we faced a team with great heart, but a team like us should kill off the match earlier,” he continued. “Surely we’ve also shown immense heart.”
“We lost a bit of our shape and composure after that foul on Lautaro after about an hour,” he continued, “we had some struggles which we’ll obviously analyze in the next few days with the guys.”
Looking ahead to next weekend’s clash with Spezia, the coach said that “We’ll work on the things we can do better. It’s only been one month from the start of our preparations, we must and can improve, with the desire that the guys show every day.”
