Inter head coach is already showing this season that he is not married to the formation and tactics he is best associated with in the Nerazzurri’s first match of the season with his switch to a 4-2-4 shape in the second half against Lecce.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who suggest that a “Simone Inzaghi 2.0” is already being witnessed with the coach demonstrating early on that he’s willing to deviate from his signature 3-5-2 formation.

Inter started Saturday’s win over Lecce in the 3-5-2 shape that they have been associated with not just under Inzaghi but also under his predecessor Antonio Conte.

However, as the match wore on and particularly after the home side equalized early in the second half, it became clear that the team were not in their ideal rhythm in the 3-5-2 system, with the players in different positions struggling to link up.

Rather than persisting stubbornly with his usual approach when it clearly was not working, the coach made several substitutions and not just this, but also fundamentally altered the team shape to a very attacking-minded 4-2-4.

Inzaghi could feel emboldened by the work that has been done in the transfer market this summer to give him a greater depth of options in all positions and more versatile players, and so a real tactical evolution of the team is already being seen.
