Legendary former Napoli and current Galatasaray striker Dries Mertens believes that Inter striker Romelu Lukaku is already showing his best at the beginning of his second stint at the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, the 35-year-old praised his Belgian teammate Lukaku, arguing that he is hardly resting on his laurels and has hardly let his level drop in his second spell in a Nerazzurri shirt.

Lukaku had nothing left to prove when he left Inter last summer to join Chelsea, having been the Nerazzurri’s decisive player on their way to their first Serie A title in eleven years.

A mediocre season spent in the Premier League has done some damage to the 29-year-old’s reputation, however, and he has made no secret of his desire to win back Nerazzurri supporters with his performances on the pitch.

For his part, Mertens believes that Lukaku hasn’t just already shown his quality with Inter, but is also continuing to do so if his performances in the early going this season are anything to go by.

“Lukaku has already shown how good he is,” Mertens explained, “but he’s also continuing to show it again now on his second adventure with Inter.”
