Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga believes that striker Romelu Lukaku more than proved himself in his first two seasons with the Nerazzurri but then experienced a dip in confidence whilst at Chelsea.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Zenga gave his view on why the Belgian was not able to replicate his Nerazzurri form at Chelsea after his big money move last summer.
Lukaku is back in Milan where he will hope to rebuild his reputation following a frustrating single season in the Premier League with Chelsea.
The 29-year-old had a few positive moments in the English capital, but the sense was that he was playing within himself and that the team wasn’t really geared towards his strengths.
Zenga attributes this drop-off to a lack of confidence from the Belgian, and believes that this is not a terribly uncommon situation within football.
“Lukaku did everything and more with Antonio Conte,” he said, “and then he went to London where it was a different situation, with a coach who treated everyone equally and didn’t seem to give him the same trust.”
“Football is full of players who’ve done very well with one team and then not with another, because of confidence,” he added.
