Former Inter and Fiorentina midfielder Borja Valero feels that one saving grace of the Nerazzurri’s damaging loss to Lazio yesterday evening is that they have virtually the entire season to recover from it.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, Valero gave the view that the Nerazzurri’s weaknesses were all on show in their 3-1 reversal at the hands of the Biancocelesti, but that it may well prove to be less decisive than if it had happened at the other end of the season.
Inter have run into a major setback in their pursuit of the Serie A title, as they have fallen to defeat against the first direct rival at the top end of the table that the schedule has placed in front of them.
The Nerazzurri had not done much to raise doubts about their status among the favourites for the Scudetto in their first two matches of the season against Lecce and Spezia, but now the impression is very different.
“Everyone has said that Inter are the strongest team, but they need to start firing more both defensively in attack,” Valero said. “Lazio played a great game and won it with their substitutions, Pedro and Luis Alberto both had a great match.”
“Inter on the other hand lacked the quality to find their forwards,” he continued, “there were many crosses but before Correa came in they created little.”
Valero then noted that “Better than it happened today, there are so many matches close together and little time to get caught up in analyzing it.”
The Spaniard also spoke about the display of defender Milan Skriniar, calling it a “Performance with great character. He’s become a leader in this team.”
