Former Serie A referee Luca Marelli has explained that Stefan de Vrijwas offside for Inter’s goal against Lazio but he was not involved in the play, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking whilst analysing the match on DAZN with other pundits, via L’Interista, Luca Marelli addressed the slight controversy that surrounded Inter’s equalising goal against Lazio in the first half which was scored by Lautaro Martinez.

The ball found its way to the Argentine in a very crowded box as the Lazio defence all rushed out of the 6-yard box almost in unison. The ball dropped for Lautaro Martinez who poked it past Ivan Provedel.

The Lazio players could be seen appealing for the goal to be ruled offside due to the positioning of Stefan de Vrij but the former referee has cleared up that the Dutch defender was not interfering in the play and therefore the goal stands.

“At the moment of the Dumfries header, the Argentine is onside. The one who is offside is De Vrij, but he was not interfering in play.”
