Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has stressed that a team such as the Nerazzurri should be able to manage a game better than they did when it was 1-1 against Lazio, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking during an interview with the media at his post-match press conference, via FCInternews, the former Lazio coach discussed the reasons behind his team’s 3-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico.

He made it clear that when the game got to 1-1, Inter should have protected the situation much better than they did do. They let it get away from them and then the two goals came from the Biancocelesti.

“In certain matches like this, with an opponent of absolute value that we know can beat anyone, a team like ours after the 1-1 should have held the field better.”

The goal that made it 2-1 to Lazio was an incredible strike from Luis Alberto which is likely to end up on end-of-season highlights reels. the quality of the striker from the edge of the box was not lost on Simone Inzaghi.

“He was great. He’s a champion, he has these goals and these plays in his heart. From him you can expect these things, I wish him to score goals in every game for the good that I love him and for what he has given me here in Rome, then clearly I would have preferred he had waited another Sunday to score this goal.”

He explained that this fixture last season came when both teams were in better physical condition and he bemoaned the chance that Denzel Dumfries missed in the second half that would have put Inter ahead.

“Certainly last year’s game had come in the seventh, eighth game of the season and the condition was better for both. We knew Lazio were going to play this game, we should have let the episode turn on our side after the 1-1 and instead after Dumfries’ chance there was this Luis Alberto goal that steered the game, but Inter were still missing a bit and after the 2-1 we had to do more.

“They played defensively in a very compact manner. Despite our supremacy in the first half, they conceded something but not a lot, we should have taken better advantage of our chances.

“There is regret for having lost the game and especially for having gone into the break down 1-0 because of a goal we could have avoided and because we could have taken better advantage of all the crosses we put into the box.”
