Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi got his tactics wrong from the start in yesterday’s Serie A clash with his old side Lazio, and his in-game tactics and substitutions were equally ineffective.
This is the scathing view of Turin-based newspaper Tuttopsort, who give the coach a rating of 4.5/10 in the player ratings for the match published in today’s print edition.
Inzaghi had deployed Roberto Gagliardini in midfield in place of regular starter Hakan Calhanoglu, something he did twice against Lazio last season, with the former Atalanta midfielder’s physicality and energy seemingly intended to counter Biancocelesti talisman Sergej Milenkovic-Savic.
However, Milinkovic-Savic had a good night, drifting around and finding ways to be influential on proceedings, not least his excellent ball into Inter’s penalty area for the Biancocelesti’s opener.
Meanwhile, the coach decided to take off all of Denzel Dumfries, Federico Dimarco, and Romelu Lukaku as part of an early triple substitution during the second half to try and shake things up and press the advantage when the scoreline was 1-1 and Inter seemingly had some momentum.
However, in the view of Tuttosport, Inzaghi got his substitutions all wrong in this instance, as Dumfries had been the Nerazzurri’s most proactive player up to that point, and switching the approach around on the flanks did little to help the team, whilst Edin Dzeko was also ineffective in Lukaku’s place.
