Lazio were able to get at Inter’s lack of compactness all over the pitch in order to secure a statement 3-1 win in yesterday evening’s Serie A clash.
This is the view of today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, who note that the Biancocelesti managed to punish the Nerazzurri for leaving spaces in the middle of the pitch with their incisive possession game to look like a threat all match.
Inter started out well enough as they looked to impose their preferred tempo on proceedings despite the fact that they were up against a formidable Lazio team at the Stadio Olimpico.
However, the unexpected selection of Roberto Gagliardini seemed throw off the team’s possession game somewhat, as the 28-year-old was never going to provide the same level of control and security that Hakan Calhanoglu would given the Turk’s superior technical ability.
This meant that the Nerazzurri gave away the ball cheaply on one or two too many occasions early on, which allowed the Biancocelesti to start to establish their own rhythm.
Maurizio Sarri’s team were in the mood to punish Inter’s mistakes, as whenever they found space to play in they looked to get the ball forward quickly through accurate passing patterns.
It was a defensive error that allowed Lazio to break through towards the end of the first half, and two top-drawer efforts from substitutes that sealed the 3-1 win in the second period, but in truth they had been showing their threat all night.
